The bike was based on the frame, engine and chassis from the Kawasaki road series [[Kawasaki_ER-6|ER-6]], however, in contrast, the Versys had a longer travel suspension, an adjustable inverted front fork (on [[Kawasaki_ER-6|ER-6]] - normal, unregulated), another subframe, front half fairing and other engine settings (reducing maximum power by improving traction at low and medium revs).
Since 2007, the Kawasaki Versys 650 has been available in the European and Canadian markets, since 2008 in the US market (excluding California), and since 2009 in California.
