The Yamaha Drag Star 650 appeared in 1997 as a replacement for the outdated [[Yamaha_XV535_Virago | Yamaha XV 535 Virago]].

In fact, the new Yamaha Drag Star 650 was built on the same old engine, which was simply bumped up to 649cc. and reconfigured for more powerful "chopper" thrust at the expense of maximum power.
