Unlike the old Yamaha XJ900F and Yamaha XJ900N models, the new version of the Yamaha XJ 900 S Diversion had a slightly modified engine, a more modern appearance, an increased fuel tank by 24 liters, and a new dashboard. The model was widely sold in Europe and Oceania (Australia), and is practically not represented in Japan.
2002 was the last year of production of the model, after which it was discontinued and did not receive further development. Official sales of new motorcycles were carried out until 2004.
