The Kawasaki GTR 1000 was based on an in-line 4-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with a volume of 997 cc. see. This engine was also installed on the sports model Kawasaki GPZ1000RX, and before it - on [[Kawasaki_GPZ900 | Kawasaki GPZ900R]]. The main difference between the Kawasaki GTR 1000 engine and the Kawasaki GPZ1000RX is the smaller carburettors (CVK32 instead of CVK36) and different camshafts.
'' Major generations of the Kawasaki GTR 1000' Generations: '''
* '''Kawasaki GTR1000 (ZG1000 Concours) 1986-1993''': first generation.
* '''Kawasaki GTR1000 (ZG1000 Concours) 1994-2006''': second generation. In addition to small visual differences, the model gets new wheels with wider tires and improved front brakes (disc diameter: 280-> 300 mm; calipers: 1-piston -> 2-piston).
2006 was the last year of production of the model, which in recent years has been available only in the North American market. In 2008, the [[Kawasaki_1400_GTR | Kawasaki GTR 1400]] was officially introduced as the successor to the GTR1000.
However, the main competitor of the Kawasaki GTR 1000 in those years was the model from the Bavarian concern BMW K100LT. The American edition "Motorcyclist", having tested both bikes, chose the Kawasaki GTR 1000, noting the model as "the most practical, reliable and competent" and also "superior to the BMW K100LT in all respects."
